It’s Stress Awareness Month and I wanted to talk about how I deal with stress. I work from home, and it can be hard to separate work life from your personal life. Preventing workaholic habits from seeping into every aspect of your life requires a purposeful decision to not let work interrupt your social, family, and health obligations. For me personally, I tend to take things on and it affects other areas of my life. It’s really important to de-stress or you’ll drive yourself crazy (take it from me!) Here are my tips:

  1. Unplug – As I mentioned above, I work from home. I don’t take any breaks, and eat my lunch at my desk while working, so by the end of the day, I’m feeling mentally drained. The first tip I have to de-stress is to unplug. If I don’t give myself a certain time to stop working, I’ll find myself working late into the evening. To prevent this, I’ll book something in my calendar, whether it’s going to a social event, going to the gym, or anything that gets me out of the house and forces me to unplug for the day.

  2. Rest well – I’m the type of person that loves to think about everything in the night. Even when I feel super tired, as soon as I turn off the lights, my mind starts racing with all sorts of thoughts: What do I have to get done tomorrow? How am I going to do it? Will I be able to do it all? Now is not the time to be thinking about all of that! I spray tea tree oil on my pillow to keep me relaxed and to help me fall asleep faster. I also cover my clock, because I find that when I get up in the middle of the night and check the time, my brain starts to think again.

  3. Stay active – I’m not being extra when I say I feel like absolute crap when I don’t exercise. Being active clears your mind and releases endorphins, which triggers positive feelings in your body. Whether you hit the gym, go out for a nature walk or do yoga, staying active is so important, especially when you’ve been sitting at your desk all day. Our generation is going to be in trouble because we’re constantly sitting down at a desk typing. Being in the same position all day and doing the same repetitive motions is a recipe for disaster, that’s why it’s so important to stay active.

  4. Create – I let out my negative energy by creating. I think whether you’re left-brained or right-brained, creating something brings us back to our stress-free childhood days and helps us to relax. I’m naturally a creative. When I’m in my zone, I feel so motivated and at ease. Whether I’m creating poems, art, blog posts, drawings, etc. it brings me to a positive state of mind where I have something tangible at the end to be proud of.

  5. Meditate/pray – Meditating and praying is definitely something that gets me through hard times and stressful situations. If there’s ever a moment I feel like what I’m doing is just too overwhelming or I’m not going to be able to complete it, I just take a deep breath, say a prayer and focus on the positive.
