QUARTER-LIFE LESSONS

December 14, 2016

I was contemplating what to name this article. Instead of “quarter-life crisis”, I decided to name it “quarter-life lessons”. I know a few people my age refer to their current predicament as a quarter life crisis, including me. I’ve come to realize that my life is far from a crisis. I’m blessed in so many ways beyond my imagination. Just because life hasn’t played out as planned, does not mean that I am going through a “crisis”.

I was one of those people that planned my life out to a T. My checklist before I reached 25 was:

  • Get married

  • Have my dream wedding

  • Have my own place

  • Start a clothing line

Although I haven’t checked anything off of that list, I can say that a new list has formed with things that I never thought I would have done: co-found a charity, put myself out there with a YouTube channel and blog, be in school for 7 years-including culinary school, and get my dream job in the non-profit industry. Life’s twists and turns allowed me to develop skills that I never knew I had, and pushed me to the limit when it came to overcoming my weaknesses.

I may not be where I thought I would be at this stage, but that’s the beauty of life. I’ve learned to come to terms with the fact that as much as you map out your life, it can take unexpected turns and throw you off track. Facing challenges doesn’t mean that you give up, get frustrated or feel like you’re in a crisis. Sometimes we just have to ride the waves of life to see where the next chapter takes us.

I’ve connected with so many great young people across Toronto that are doing amazing things. Just like me, they ended up where they are by fate, not by solely relying on a detailed plan (of course there is nothing wrong with having goals and steps to achieve them). They inspire me to keep going, and despite the adversities that come their way, they don’t give up.

I’m excited to see what’s in store for the next quarter of my life. There are so many things that I want to do, but at the end of the day, I have to remember that it’s not about my timing, it’s about God’s timing. Everything will fall into place eventually (including my original checklist)!
